REFUGEE/IMMIGRANT FAMILY ENGAGEMENT BOOKLET FOR TEACHERS

Difficulties in refugee and immigrant family and school communication are a very common topic in the literature and in the reports of international organizations regarding the education of children. In order to provide support to families and teachers on this issue, a family engagement booklet was prepared to meet the needs that were determined in a concrete manner throughout the project. This booklet was prepared by the project coordinator after the studies conducted with Syrian migrant children, their teachers and families and was used on the MAPPS: Math and Parent Partnership in the Southwest project family booklet that was prepared by Civil (2003). The content of the booklet covered communication methods with refugee and immigrant children and their families, their possible needs, the access of families to the school and the possible obstacles before ensuring the continuity of their access. In addition, the mathematics workshops that carried out during the project are included in detail as examples of family engagement. The booklet is available in both e-booklet and printed forms.
